Its Not Easy Bein' Green

16x20

Mixed Media

2020

I don't like to assign much meaning to a piece, but I will give some information of the two events I chose to merge to create it.

1. During the 1968 olympics Tommie Smith(gold) and John Carlos(bronze) raised a black glove fist during the national anthem, for human rights. Both athletes also wore black socks, to represent black poverty. Smith wore a scarf for black pride. Carlos had his jacket unzipped for solidarity with blue collar workers. In addition, all three medalist (including Australian Peter Norman) wore an OPHR badge on thier jackets during the ceremony. This moment was originally captured by photographer John Dominis

2. "Its not easy being green" (aka Green) was written in 1970 for the first season of Sesame Street by Joe Raposo. Its been described as "a frogs poignant realization of his own dignity and worth" and has been viewed as a powerful message about race. Since it's initial debut, Kermit has sung his iconic tune with multiple friends including Ray Charles and Frank Sinatra.
