How can I unstick a piece of glazed pottery from Kiln shelf?
Q. I have 2 pieces of glazed pottery on one of my kild shelves and can't get them off. Any ideas?
Asked by Vonda Kay - Wed May 7 15:14:04 2008 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments
A. Take a look at your piece and revise the question. Did you use kiln wash on the shelf? Kiln wash helps to a degree. Is the piece stuck in a few places? You might be able to chip the glaze away using a chisel and hammer wear safety glasses is the piece solidly glued to the piece? You might be out of luck You could try to hit the piece with a piece of wood. The you could try using the wood like a chisel with a hammer. Talk to some people locally before deciding which is more valuable--- The Pieces or the shelf. Sort of seeing what you can salvage.

place a broken pottery in the pot in order to hasten the softening of meat?
Q. Some people place a piece of broken pottery in the pot in order to hasten the softening of meat. Is this scientific? Why?
Asked by nicole11 - Mon Mar 10 07:46:31 2008 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments
A. This is an amazingly dangerous idea. Crockery with faulty glazing has caused health concerns before now. This was reported at the time in a science magazine (Scientific American or New Scientist). To use broken crokery is to expose the inside which could easily have poisonous substances. You could more or less expect some of the inside to dissolve in water. Meat can be softened in various safe ways e.g. sprinkle with papain (enzyme) got from pineapples.

Q. I am thinking of buying bedroom furniture from Pottery Barn. Is it made well and worth the price that is charged?
Asked by betty - Mon May 28 20:55:15 2007 - - 5 Answers - 1 Comments
A. I think when it comes to the price, you are paying for the name. However, just from personal experience, it is some of the highest quality furniture you can buy. Also, when you are considering PB, there really is no other way to get the "Pottery Barn Look." The fabrics are wonderful. You can order samples on their site.

What should I look for in purchasing Polish Pottery?
Q. I am wanting some new dinner plates. I am facinated by the Polish Pottery I've been finding on ebay, but it seems they have different looks and sizes. Dinner plates seem to run from 9 to 11 inches. Is there one brand better to collect than another. Are there fakes, and what do I watch out for? Thanks!
Asked by fireflynites - Fri Jan 26 16:48:55 2007 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments
A. The best way to find out how or if something is collectible is to go to your local library and take out a book on the subject. I wouldn't recommend collectibles as everyday dishes as they would have more chance of getting broken, thus losing their value. As for fakes, the books will give you enough knowledge to spot any fakes, and you can talk to antique/china dealers to find out even more. I would start out buying the styles/sizes you like and then, as you become more knowledgeable, branch out into the more collectible styles.

How much do chips and cracks really detract from the value of a collectible piece of pottery or glassware?
Q. For example, Roseville pottery or Carnival glass? I have a green glass ice bucket with a Heisey mark on the bottom. It had an almost microscopic "flake" on the top edge and to hear antique dealers and collectors moan about it making the item virtually worthless. Is this true, or are they just looking to get things for an exceptional bargain?

what kind of scale is used to measure clay when making pottery and where can it be found cheaply?
Q. I am trying to make my own pottery studio, going off of memory from other studios I've used. I am looking for the scale to measure wet clay, not powder for glazes, etc. Someone said to look for a postal scale, but this only goes up to 2 lbs. What kind of scale do people usually use in a pottery studio?
Asked by Sheila K - Tue May 11 01:02:38 2010 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments
A. how about a cheap kitchen scale? You might even be able to find one in a thrift store or used on craigs list. The only reason I can think of to weigh wet clay would be to make it easier to make plates, cups or bowls of consistent size. If you don't want to do that I would not worry about a scale right now.

A small rubber wheel is used to drive a lage pottery wheel, and they are mounted so that their circular edges?
Q. touch. The small wheel has a radius of 2.0 cm and accelerates at the rate of 7.2 rad/s^2 and it is in contact with the pottery wheel (radius 25.0 cm). Calculate a) the angular acceleration of the pottery wheel and b) the time it takes the pottery wheel to reach its required speed of 65 rpm.
Asked by eddieexpiggy - Thu Nov 29 05:43:49 2007 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments
A. First you must find the tangential acceleration of the outer most point on the small wheel. This is equal to the angular acceleration times the radius. a = r*(angular acceleration) = 2(7.2) = 14.4 cm/s^s This is equal to the tangential acceleration of the outer most point on the large wheel because they are in contact and not slipping. So the to find the angular acceleration of the large wheel, you divide the tangential acceleration by the radius. angular acceleration = a/r = 14.4/25 = 0.576 rad/s^2 To find the time it takes the large wheel to reach 65 rpm you must first convert it to rad/s (65rev / 1min)(2pi rad / 1rev)(1min / 60sec) = 6.8068 rad/s The angular acceleration multiplied by time will give you the angular velocity. angular… [cont.]
