The Pacific Ocean is the largest of the Earth's oceanic divisions. It extends from the Arctic in the north to the Southern Ocean in the south, bounded by Asia and Australia in the west, and the Americas in the east. The water temperature really isn't the problem with a swim of this magnitude, most veteran open water swimmers can handle temperatures in the 60 - 70 degree range. Fast open water swimmer can swim about 1 mile every 20 -25 minutes. The English Channel record is just under 7 hours and that is about 18 miles long. The problem is keeping this up for long periods of time. It can be done for 8 hours or so, but after that, swimmers start to slow down. Also, there is a problem trying to swim day after day. It would be much better a group of swimmers could attempt something like this, switching off relay style about every 4 hours.
