The 34th largest state by area in the U.S., it is the 7th-most populous with nearly 11.5 million residents. The state's capital is Columbus. The Anglicized name 'Ohio' comes from the Iroquois word ohi-yo’, meaning 'great river'. The state, originally partitioned from the Northwest Territory, was admitted to the Union as the 17th state (and the first under the Northwest Ordinance) on March 1, 1803. Although there are conflicting narratives regarding the origin of the nickname, Ohio is historically known as the 'Buckeye State' (relating to the Ohio Buckeye Tree) and Ohioans are also known as 'Buckeyes.' The government of Ohio is composed of the executive branch, led by the Governor; the legislative branch, which comprises the Ohio General Assembly; and the judicial branch, which is led by the Supreme Court. If i wanted to buy a non-motorized "pedle" boat to dock and ride on a lake where I live, what Ohio laws exist that I need to be aware of? Do I need to have a lisence to ride a pedle boat? You can usually find out either through the state's DMV or DNR (Department of Natural Resources). Ohio is one of those states that does require registration: I don't know of anywhere that requires a personal license or liability insurance. If you're concerned about liability, check to see what your homeowners/renters policy covers (biggest concern would be if you're going to lend out the boat regularly to people who might not know what they're doing). Some parks and other areas may require launching fees. At the very least, you're required to have a life jacket on board for each person. Some areas require you to be wearing it.
