Have you seen a decorative use for the wooden box cover of an old treadle sewing machine?
Q. The box is an interesting shape, but it's in poor condition. It has an opening on the bottom, so I just can't imagine how to use it. I only want to put effort into it for a good reason. The laminate is peeling in one corner, all the corners need to be glued and it's very dirty having been in a shed. Any suggestions?

A. From the sounds of things, the repair needed to bring it back to life are fairly minimal. Do you have the rest of the machine? If not, you might consider offering the top as-is for someone who is rebuilding an old machine. Parts aren't always easy to come by!

Hi. Has anyone out there ever heard of the brand Redwing when it comes to treadle sewing machines?
Q. The machine is in an old fold-out cabinet. Thanks.
Asked by Pam E - Mon Nov 19 01:08:01 2007 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Sorry, I can find nothing on that make of machine. It's possible that it was specially made for the Red Wing shoe company for use in their factories long long ago. I did find an old photo from the factory of a worker using an old treadle machine but I couldn't see a name on the machine. There are a couple vintage treadle sewing machine groups in Yahoo groups, perhaps someone in one of those groups might be able to help. Sorry!

How do I fix my treadle sewing machine? The needle won't go up or down.?
Q. I have a treadle sewing machine, and the needle won't go up or down (either when I treadle it or when I turn the wheel manually)... I have taken it off of the base and I can't see anything that is making it stick or any big clog of thread. There is nothing electronic on the machine to be broken. Help!

A. My guess: there will be a shaft that has an off set crank attached to it. Look at the connection point and see if it is loose. there may be a screw, bolt or Keyway that has loosened. If it can be tightened or reattached, then it will resume working. good luck,

Q. i cant find serial #s ANYwhere on either machine; would like info on who made these 2 treadles, the time frame,& where i can obtain owners manuals & accessories? (& the skeleton keys for them) trying to find info has led to frustration w/o knowing where to search! any suggestions? thx!

A. If you don't get a better answer, I'd talk to the nice folks on the ISMACS and TreadleOn email lists. It appears the New Ideal is a New Home model. Don't know about the 'Favorite', but others may recognize it if you put a picture up someplace like picturetrail.

Treadle The Elgin Sewing Machine, I need a manual badly can someone help me.?
Q. Yes I just got an "the Elgin" treadle (powered by foot) antique sewing machine.. I sew on antique sewing machines...so please, can anyone help..it comes with a cabinet..3 small drawers on each side and it is called "the elgin". If I can avoid buying a manual would help as I am not rich, and the aprons and purses I make I do not charge that much for...(thought I'd throw that in).. but either way, I cannot sew on this machine until I have this info... thanks guys, and God bless you,

A. I found a site with a $12 book, includes shipping. Here you go: If they don't have it, look here: There's also a good forum on ebay that you might get some info from. check it out: I tried to find a pdf for you, but there doesn't seem to be one anywhere, darn it. Best of luck to you, and have fun with your new/old machine.

I have an antique G model singer Sewing machine, It is a treadle style Serial number14251761851?
Q. I am just wondering what it was valued at. I have a neighbor that wants to give me $100.00
Asked by Leslie - Wed Jun 9 15:37:36 2010 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. The G series machines don't have serial numbers that high. See: I'm guessing you've got a 20th century treadle machine, which would make the value in my part of the world somewhere between $0 and about $150, depending on model, decoration, serviceability and which way the wind is blowing. Figure out what model you actually have:

A. Depends on the make and the age of the machine. It would either be a metal or wooden frame with the treadle built into it and a wooden 'table top' with the sewing machine built into it. Some had little wooden drawers each side, just under the table and some had a fold up extention to the table on the side. Is that what you meant??

what is a florence special vibrating shuttle in a treadle cabiet sewing machine worth?
Q. It is in great condition
Asked by schaana w - Sun Jul 22 22:36:46 2007 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Hi: Depending on the actual condition of the machine and cabinet, and if the machine still works and none of the parts are missing, you are looking at a minimum value of $250. It can be worth a lot more -- maybe as much as $1,000 because the machine and cabinet are more than 125 years old. To get an accurate appraisal of the machine and cabinet worth, you would need to consult a professional like ISAMACS. Good luck!

A. Could you have an extra digit in that number? The serial numbers recorded on Singer's website don't go that far in the D series: Assuming that's the case, it was probably made in 1908 or 1909. You can call or email Singer's customer service, also, and see if they have additional information on the machine: Once you know what model it is, you can get a manual here: -- often free on older machines. You may also be able to get a parts chart and/or service information at: What other information are you looking for?

A. Condition, rarity, provenance, accessories all play into it, as does local market conditions. Remember that Singer made tons of sewing machines (literally!) and many of them are still sewing years and years and years later -- and if cared for, can still be sewing in another hundred years.

A. As one who works refinishing antiques and such, I can tell you that the machine is not worth very much unless it has a history with your family - so sentimental value is about all it has. I have made three tables out of the metal stands and they make unique pieces where ever you put them.
