Where to find pottery studio?
Q. I live in the milwaukee area, and love ceramics and I would buy a potters wheel but have no place to fire my work. It's not hard to build a raku kiln but I still need to bisque fire, does anyone know where you can fire pieces or rent studio time?
Asked by fifi - Mon May 29 09:55:10 2006 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Check out www.potters.org - I think they have a listing of studios that do timeshares or are willing to biscuit fire other people's stuff. You might also try a Google search. I recently bought a wheel and was lucky enough to find a place (in the middle of nowhere, SC) only a few minutes away that will fire for me, so it's definitely not impossible. Also, try some of the Yahoo! groups for pottery - you might find someone in your area who is willing to help.

How to start a studio Pottery ?
Q. I would like to start hobby pottery studio for learners and professionels. What are the basic equipments required and cost involved ? I own lamd of 2700 square feet (270 m2 app)
Asked by madhusudhana v - Fri Aug 8 04:29:20 2008 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. First you need to be in the right location...to get enough support from users/ sharers and potential buyers of the pots when they are made. You have to make it pay and how are you going to finance it. Are you going to charge for teaching classes in pottery? Are you hoping to get professionals to share the costs.? Setting up a pottery with a large enough kiln and several wheels is going to be expensive, Then you need space for the clay bins, shelving for the drying pots until you have enough to make up a firing, somewhere to put the fired ware to cool gradually, large tables to work at for glazing / decorating etc. I think a feasibility study is essential. If you had a local college, or arts centre who have the equipment it would be easiest… [cont.]

A. If there is no date or other inscription on the base of the vase or the bottom, then it may well be very hard to price. The rarity may or may not be true thing. You need to check with both Sothbey's and Christie's auction house websites. They have experts who can help you. The Antiques Roadshow has a website, but I don't know what it is offhand. The experts they use come from all over the world and if you have ever watched the show, are quite knowledgeable. Good luck!

Is there a web site that shows pictures of layouts of pottery studios?
Q. I am in the process of building a pottery studio and would like as much information as possible before all of my electrical, lighting, shelving, etc. are completed. I designed my studio floor plan, but on 2nd thought, would like suggestions from others who already have a studio and could advise me on things I might not have already considered which would be helpful.

im designing my own art (pottery) studio for a project in art class...?
Q. where might I go to get information on what I need in the studio, what would be the best layout and where I can get all the equipment and materials?
Asked by photogrphy_addict89 - Tue May 8 20:25:24 2007 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. There are a couple of good books on Pilchuck (Ceramics at .. and Pottery at .. ) that include some studio images. At the ceramics supply place (clay and stuff) I use there is a considerable supply of books with several on the business of being a potter with layouts and equipment. I do know that lots of storage is needed for air drying, bisque fired and being glazed, ready for shipping, etc.

When cleaning up clay after using a pottery wheel- is it safe to wash clay down the drain?
Q. I put the large chunks of clay in my slurry bucket, but what about the small bits that inevitably wash down the sink during cleanup? Is this a problem? Could it clog my drain? Is there a special filter for clay only? I have a small shop sink in my studio that I use.
Asked by mbushatz - Mon Mar 3 14:38:52 2008 - - 4 Answers - 0 Comments

A. If you can make a receptable for your sink. It is basically a big bowl of water with a drain near the top. Your clay, and all the other solids will sink, the chemicals will rise to the top of the water where they can evaporate, (if you use oil-based paints they will float on the top of the water for you to clean away.) There should be plans on the web. Clay will clog your drain, and a filter will not work, as the clay particles are too small. Added: I was trying to find the link of that post by meeny mo, this is what I found, would work too: But you would have to clean out the upper bucket after each use, to prevent it getting clogged.

Pottery Classes in Sydney?
Q. Hi all, I'm new to Sydney and am interested in taking some pottery classes. I'm looking for a pottery studio that can accommodate me on a casual basis such as two Sunday's a month and the odd Tuesday or Thursday as well. Has anyone come across such a pottery studio in Sydney that offers this? Thanks in advance, Heidi
Asked by Sydney Pottery Class Query - Thu Dec 31 00:43:43 2009 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Hi Heidi, I took some classes at this great little studio in Sydney's south in the suburb of Bundeena which also has some lovely beaches and bushwalks. You can book with them on any day including weekends. They do both pottery wheel throwing as well as handbuilding classes and you get to paint and glaze as well. I did a private individual class with them but they also do classes for groups. The place was called Something at Mary's and you can get more info on them at Good luck, Wanda

Kilns for public use in or near Derry, New Hampshire?
Q. I'm hoping to buy a small potter's wheel sometime in the near future, but I don't have the money, room, or technical knowledge to have my own kiln. Even better would be a place that has open wheels, clay, glazes, AND a kiln. Basically, I'm seeking a pottery studio. The less expensive, the better.

A. Google reports Pottery kilns near Derry this place west River Bend Pottery 22 Riverbend Rd, Wilton, NH - (603) 654-2752 and this place south (which might be faster) Boston Kiln Services 66 Thomas St, Medford, MA - (617) 926-1802 But putting in Manchester and just pottery returns a number of studios, etc.

A. masquerade in paris you guys could dress up and have an effiel tower, and do the whole masks. such as this one... -you could have a cafe area... -you could do a photo shoot... best of luck! ~~~ you could do a glamour theme/runway, you could hire a make up/hair artist and have your friends all dolled up then do a little fashion show, hence photoshoot OR both themes combined (paris/glamour)

A. No, I believe both the Craft Guild and the Creative Arts Center limit access to their equipment to people who have taken their classes - the stuff is costly and they want some confidence it will not be misused or turn the people watching the space into instructors for people who want to wander in and skip the classes. But ask.
