Studio pottery is made by modern artists working alone or in small groups, producing unique items or pottery in small quantities, typically with all stages of manufacture carried out by one individual. Much studio pottery is table ware or cook ware but an increasing number of studio potters produce non-functional or sculptural items. Since the 1980s there has been a distinct trend away from functional pottery (e.g. Grayson Perry) and some studio potters now prefer to call themselves ceramic artists, ceramists or simply artists. Studio pottery is represented by potters all over the world but has strong roots in Britain. Since the second half of the 20th century ceramics has become more highly valued in the art world. There are now several large exhibitions worldwide, including Collect and Origin (formerly the Chelsea crafts fair) in London, SOFA Chicago and SOFA New York (international expositions of sculpture and applied art) that include ceramics as a major art form. Studio pottery is also sold at high prices, reaching several thousands of pounds for some pieces, in auctions houses such as Bonhams and Sothebys. From Wikipedia under the

Q. where might I go to get information on what I need in the studio, what would be the best layout and where I can get all the equipment and materials? Asked by photogrphy_addict89 - Tue May 8 20:25:24 2007 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments A. There are a couple of good books on Pilchuck (Ceramics at .. and Pottery at .. ) that include some studio images. At the ceramics supply place (clay and stuff) I use there is a considerable supply of books with several on the business of being a potter with layouts and equipment. I do know that lots of storage is needed for air drying, bisque fired and being glazed, ready for shipping, etc. Answered by mike1942f - Sat May 12 21:12:46 2007 What type of pottery wheel should I buy? Q. I am signed up a for a beginner's lesson, but recently found out that a local high school will be auctioning off their pottery wheels and kilns. I don't know what type they are, but in general, would this likely be a good purchase? What are the price ranges I should expect? Also, does anyone know where there would be a studio that gives lessons close to Mansfield Ohio? The one I'm signed up at is over an hour away. Thanks!! Asked by Amy B - Tue Nov 27 20:45:10 2007 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments A. Brent wheels are pretty much the best (electric wheels) you can get. I paid about $1000 for my Brent CXC, which is a 1 hp engine. Don't buy anything lower than 1/3 hp, it will not be strong enough. For hobby use a used wheel would probably be fine. Basically you need to check out the wheels by trying them, if possible. When you center the clay, especially large amounts, the wheel should not slow or stall. The wheel should not shake excessively. Sit down, make sure you are comfortable. Personally I hate using wheels that don't have tray attachments. I would not buy a used kiln that was in heavy use at a school. They will most likely be old and finicky, and they will need parts and coils that you will not know how to replace. Q. Hi all, I'm new to Sydney and am interested in taking some pottery classes. I'm looking for a pottery studio that can accommodate me on a casual basis such as two Sunday's a month and the odd Tuesday or Thursday as well. Has anyone come across such a pottery studio in Sydney that offers this? Thanks in advance, Heidi Asked by Sydney Pottery Class Query - Thu Dec 31 00:43:43 2009 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments A. Hi Heidi, I took some classes at this great little studio in Sydney's south in the suburb of Bundeena which also has some lovely beaches and bushwalks. You can book with them on any day including weekends. They do both pottery wheel throwing as well as handbuilding classes and you get to paint and glaze as well. I did a private individual class with them but they also do classes for groups. The place was called Something at Mary's and you can get more info on them at Good luck, Wanda Answered by ozgal - Sun Jan 3 19:31:22 2010 From Yahoo Answer Search: "Studio pottery" |
